Test Of Legal Term Recognition

This is an initial step in creating a new forensic test, called the Test of Legal Term Recognition. The first study for proof of concept has been approved by the internal review board at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas and is scheduled to take place in Spring 2023.

  • Inventory of Legal Knowledge

The Inventory of Legal Knowledge is published by PAR and it is considered the gold standard for detecting feigned deficits in legal knowledge. ILK and PsychTech projects to further develop its utility and accuracy are scheduled, primarily to focus on extending the ILK’s use with special populations, such as ID defendants, juveniles, and Spanish-speakers.

  • Trial Competency and the Mendocino Method

The Mendocino Method has been designed to provide outpatient competency restoration services to defendants in outpatient and jail-based settings in the local community, in contrast to inpatient competency restoration services traditionally provided in remote institutions. The Mendocino Method and PsychTech project is focused on further developing the overall competency test as well as collecting item-level data on chapter quizzes for each training module.

  • Test of Malingered Incompetence

The Test of Malingered Incompetence consists of two, 25-item independent scales— General Knowledge (TOMI-G) and Legal Knowledge (TOMI-L). These scales utilize a 2AFC strategy to screen for malingered impairment in competence to stand trial. The TOMI and PsychTech project is geared toward collecting item-level data for further test development and revision of both scales.

  • MIST-60, A, & B

The three Massachusetts Incompetence to Stand Trial (MIST) questionnaires were developed to help forensic psychologists and psychiatrists quickly yet accurately assess malingering with respect to competency to stand trial. The MIST and PsychTech project focuses on collecting appropriate norms for use with Spanish-speaking populations.
